Somewhere Down The Barrel

The other day I had the itch to sketch it out, here was the result:

down the barrelThis was a totally different outcome than my normal sketches of cute things puked into my sketchbook.

When I was in college I had an unhealthy obsession with Daniel Johns from Silverchair. He had a side project called The Dissociatives, which was completely insane to my alternative loving self at the time, but the lyrics really spoke to me.

Here is the video to give you a visual:

Maybe my morning pages have been giving me deep thoughts, but here are a selection of lyrics that were swimming in my head while drawing:

"when everyone's a stranger
they call for you by your first name
and laugh at jokes you once made
when you were a kid"

"i'm plagued by small town fascists
like a rash on my skin"

"when paintings seem like bargains
but they're nothing but wallpaper"

The illustration reminds me of myself a long time ago. Kinda quirky, ready for crazy, and usually smiling on the outside. I've been thinking a lot about being "grown up" these days, which had me reflecting on the days where people ask you, "Where do you think you'll be in 10 years?"

Are you where you thought you'd be? Where do you think you'll be? Something to think about for sure.

That's What She Said Sunday

I feel like I am drawn to things that most people would pass by or deem ugly. I kinda like those things because no one has them. Who wants something that is boring?!

Be Present

Recently I was in the waiting room at the doctor's office and I noticed that everyone (and I  mean everyone) was completely absorbed in their phones. I was the only odd ball reading a real book. Since that day I notice it everywhere I go, even at home. I'm not gonna lie and say I'm never on my phone because that would be a lie, I am addicted to Instagram, Twitter, and now Vine.

This observation has got me thinking about how things used to be before we all had iPhones as an extension of ourselves. What are we missing out on as our heads are down, eyes locked onto the tiny screen?

So this is my reminder to you, to put your phone down sometimes and just relish in the moment now. You may be missing out on something precious while you're trying to document and share it with the world. Just enjoy, and be present. I know I am...

That's What She Said Sunday

I know it's easy to get stuck in a mundane rut. Like working a job you don't love, or feeling like you don't have time to do the things you want. If there's one thing I've learned from becoming a stay at home mom, it's you have to do something.

I try to squeeze in some blog posts and crafty time between feedings and naps. I let friends drop by even when my house is a wreck and I haven't showered in days. Yeah, life with a newborn is a tad challenging, but I don't want loose sight of myself and the things I love just because I've become a parent. I think if I don't take a little down time for myself, I might go crazy.

So this is a reminder to live your life, and not just go through the motions.

Happy Sunday!
